missing RAM?

hi i bought a ram of 512MB this is part of the report of everest:

SPD Memory Modules:
DIMM1: Micron Tech. 256 MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM (3.0-3-3-8 @ 200 MHz) (2.5-3-3-7 @ 166 MHz) (2.0-2-2-6 @ 133 MHz)
DIMM2: Micron Tech. 256 MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM (3.0-3-3-8 @ 200 MHz) (2.5-3-3-7 @ 166 MHz) (2.0-2-2-6 @ 133 MHz)

the problem is that when checking in "system" or in the task manager or in everest i see only 448MB
is this ok?
if so what does it mean the number 512?

Does your motherboard have on-board video? If it does and you're using it, that's where the lost system RAM went. On-board video uses system RAM.

That has to be the case. Subtract 64 MB from 512 and you get your 448. 64 MB of shared RAM for onboard video is common.

No, as long as they're all the same speed and density you should be fine.

Instead of buying more RAM, get a video card for your computer. Maybe cheaper then a 256 MB stick of RAM. 448 MB should be fine for your usage. Unless you are doing some heavy duty applications you shouldn't need to upgrade to more RAM. You can get a Radeon 9200 or FX5200 for about 60-70 bucks and it will blow away your onboard video. Make sure that the video cards are 128-bit and not the 64-bit models. If you want to go this direction let me know and I will suggest something for you.

^that is if u want to do gaming.

u shouldn't need more ram because of this 'missing' ram.. 64mb out of 512mb isn't noticeable.

'is mixing 256 and 512 chips on the same system a problem?'
- no but u would lose dual-channel ability
