dvd drive problem

i found a toshiba dvd drive in one of the old computers my dad gave to me and i decided to install it into my computer. i took out the normal cd drive and left the cd burner. i set up the dvd drive as a slave drive and put it where the old normal cd drive was, same cables and everything. when i rebooted, windows would not detect the drive, but i opened it, closed it, and when i closed it the disk started spinning up. i rebooted and went into my bios and the secondary ide slave was disabled. i changed the type to a cd drive, saved, and exited. now when i rebooted, i got something like ATAPI incompatable (or not compatable) i think. now this is the first optical drive i've installed so i know i did something wrong. i also don't have a floppy drive so i can't do any sort of drivers thru that. any ideas? (and i have to much unbacked up stuff to reformat at this time)

Check your cabling and jumpering. Did you jumper it exactly the same as the drive you replaced it with?

yes, the little black thing is on the pins in the same place, all the cables were exactly the same as the one that was previously in.

which version of windows are you useing ?
it is a possibility that it may need special drivers for it to work.
what can you tell us about what kind of computer it came out of.

i'm running windows xp home. and i think the reason it's not working is because i pulled it out of a 5 year old gateway, so it may be a proprietary part (however my dell laptop had something about atapi and the dvd drive and my old one looked identical

The drive may be bad. There shouldn't be any problems if you set the drive up the same as the old one.

i don't think it is because when i had it set up on my hard drive IDE cable, it detected the drive fine but i couldn't get to the hard drive. when i get home from school i'll try setting it to the master drive and my burner to the slave
