Aftermarket battery fries laptop wall adapter?

Recently purchesed an aftermarket battery for a Compaq Presario 1200. Installed the battery and charged it overnight.
Now the laptop will not power up from any source (new battery, old battery, or wall adapter).
When charging I noticed the Compaq's battery light was not lit.

The aftermarket box clearly states it's for the Compaq Presario 1200, 1600, & 1800 series

The adapter's output states 19V 3.16A 60W MAX. My volt meter registers about 12-12.5V of output.

The laptop powered up just fine (from wall adapter) before charging the aftermarket battery.

Is it possible for a battery to fry a wall adapter?

its possible, in electronics, anythings possible, but I feel its unlikely that it did, but then the power adapter does not sound good, if the rateing says 19 volts it should read a bit higher without any load, so its possibly bad,
now it is possible that the charging of the new battery was the cause of extera loade on it and it was ready to fail anyway, it just broke the straw.
get a new adapter and you should be ok, unless ofcourse the new battery is in fact bad, which would cause the problem, its something you need to test out to know for sure.
take the battery back where you bought it and have them test it to see.
