safe ? yes but if you need that much cooling you got something else wrong,
that large of a fan may affect the air flow around the heatsink and actually reduce the cooling effect

There are many variables to consider. One of the most important (to me, anyway) is that if you "mod" the stock HS/fan combo, that VOIDs the 3 year warranty. Second, size is not everything. The important spec is the CFM. You can replace a high speed 60MM fan with 25 - 30 CFM with a low speed 80MM fan with only 18 - 22 CFM and will have actually lost cooling efficiency.

If you haven't overclocked there is almost no reason to upgrade from the stock heatsink.

What kind of temps are you seeing now?

Why do you want to reduce those temps?

Are you overclocking?

Is noise a concern?

Is looks a priority?

no i havent overclocked yet
reason being i have an old motherboard that wont run my 2400 at full speed
instead it runs it at 1500 at that speed im seeing temps of about 48 under load
and yes once i get my new mobo in next 4 weeks i will be over clocking
no noise is no problem
yes i must admit i like things that look good

48 degrees under load isn't too bad.

But since you are overclocking you can also look at the Zalman Heatsinks here.

The Zalman heatsinks are very quiet.

Depending on how much you're going to overclock, you may also want to check out the Thermalright heatsinks here.

the thermaltake SI-97 is going to be (if it isn't availalbe yet??) the best cooling u can get for Socket A. do you have mounting holes around the CPU on your motheboard?.
