That's too hot. You gotta improve your cooling setup before you try and push the overclock any more.

I'll second that... you're bound to eventually have rebooting, shutdowns, and lockups eventually.

I'd be surprised if you aren't experiencing problems already.

The AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Barton core runs idle around 36~40 degrees Celcius on Stock. I would certainly suggest a better cooling mechanism for the processor and some thermal dissipating solution as 50~70 C degrees running temperature effectively doubled your temperature.

could it damage my cpu or what? it goes down to 45 at idle now. 70 was under a full 100% load for an hour. When playing wc3 it only gets to like 60-65 max.

I doubt 70 Celcius at load is going to damage the CPU - but it's better to be on the safe side and get some extra cooling. You may want to step down on the overclocking a bit.

It's a bit high, but you should be able to manage. After all, remember that 3.6 prescotts don't burn up and they idle at about 60C

That's comparing apples to oranges. Different chips altogether.

Trying doing a forum search for "cooling" and "athlon".

Bah, I know. I realized that comparison didn't work after I posted.

not really because they are both gona melt at a similar temperature. my guess is that my cpu could be runnining close to a 3600+. thats huge in my mind. a 1000+ overclock hehe.

not really. prescotts are made to be able to sustain higher temps. the 2600+ barton doesn't have as good of a system as intel builds into the P4s so they downclock at higher temps.

hmm im not sure what size of cpu fan fits on my heatsink currently. i dont mind noise so i could get one with quite a bit of air flow. Does anyone know what size fans the stock heatsink supports for amd athlon 2600+ barton?

My Althon XP 1800+ has run at 65 to 70 C for three years and I haven't had any problems.
