Mouse problem

Sony Vaio, PII 266, 98se (upgraded from 95). I have just the tower to clean up. On boot I get a message, "no mouse found...serial mouse can be plugged in now. System must be shut down to plug in a PS/2 mouse". I was using a MS Wheel Mouse Optical which is a USB with USB to PS/2 adapter. Tried an old Gateway ball mouse - same problem. Tried an old MS mouse that says on the bottom "Serial Mouse Port Compatible Mouse 2.0". System boot up just fine. Checked in Device Manager and the mouse is listed as a PS/2 mouse. Plugged in the Optical mouse to a USB port and it was recognized and works fine. However, I have to keep the Serial (?) mouse plugged in to the mouse port in order to use the optical. Both then work fine. Can't find anything in the bios. Wondering if there's anyway to edit the System.ini or boot.ini file to correct this. Any other solution welcome. Customer would like a new optical mouse with a wheel. Right now my only option is to plug in her old mouse and store in behind the computer while she uses the optical.

I know you looked in the BIOS, but, is there a "Reset Configuration Data" option there? If so, try it.

Maybe the bios can't detect the mouse when using the usb/ps2 adaptor connecting to the mouse port.

Ok, tried that. Now I have a "dead" system! Saved the change exiting bios and it went to a blank screen and just sits there. Tried using the recovery jumper to reset the CMOS but that had no effect either. Looks like I'm gonna have some fun, eh?

This keeps getting stranger. When I ran a system analysis at PC Pitstop, it reports the mouse as a PS/2 device! Seems like any PS/2 mouse would then work. Time to search for a bios upgrade me thinks.

Found a new bios but it was still listed for Win 95. Updated anyway but no change to the mouse recognition. The battle continues.
