Help installing IDE controller card

Having trouble installing this IDE controller card I purchased from CompUSA. It is the ITE IT8212 Raid Controller that should allow up to 4 more 40-pin IDE devices to run on my system. (PII, 400mhz, Win 98SE)

After I install the card in a PCI slot the card's bios does a search for connected devices. It finds the devices OK but when switching to the Windows screen the registry bar at the bottom hangs up almost immediately. Tried removing the devices, same thing. Tried using all the other PCI slots (evening moving the graphics card to do so), same thing.

I can get it to boot to Windows Safe mode but the ITE card is not shown.

I can get it to load cirrectly to the point of asking for drivers if I install it in my PIII, 866mhz Win2000 machine.

The little booklet says "Pentium Pro, Pentium III, IV or later" but the box says
just "Pentium class computer".

Anyone with real knowledge of this ITE card, please advise??

Did you install the drivers when it was in the 866MHz machine? Did it work or did it freeze? If it doesn't work in that computer, the card is defective.

I did not want it installed in that machine so, no, I did not but it seemed clear to me that, since it did not hang on the windows start up and I got a clean boot all the way to windows 2000 it was OK.

I have checked the ITE web site and their manual on line but cannot find anything that says it is limited to a PIII machine or higher.

For compatibility and quality reasons, I'd advise you to return the card and get one made by Promise Technologies.
