External HD with USB 2.0... only have 1.1
My buddy just called with a question for me. He just bought an external hard drive and keeps getting some kind of message saying a high speed device is plugged into a non-high speed port. Also something about needing USB 2.0 capability....I think he only has 1.1 on his computer. Is there a soft fix for this, or foes he need to buy some hardware?

if he just clicks ok , it will go ahead and work, but just at the lower usb 1.1 speed, I run into that all the time, and it's a message to let you know.

USB 2.0 is supposed to be backward compatible with USB 1.0...I think the message is just telling him that data transfer will be faster if he had USB 2.0. It should still work, only slower.
He could install a USB 2.0 controller card. Cricket
