Installing 3rd Hard Drive - Issue with SATA and UDMA
Ok, bit of a newbie, but I'm trying desperately to figure this one out without having to bring my PC into the computer store. Here's what I have and it runs beautifully:
P4 3.2Ghz 1GB Ram 2 x SATA 120GBs drive - set up on RAID 0 (striped) (Western Digital Caviar) ASUS P4C800 Deluxe Motherboard Windows XP I'm nervous about having all my data on the RAID 0 drive (just in case it irreparably crashes), so I bought a UDMA 200GBs drive to add in. I have the space and the IDE sockets, so I thought, hey, no problem. I plugged the new hard drive into the Primary IDE socket, as my DVD-RW/CD-RW is on the Secondary one. However, when I tried to reboot, I got the ASUS screen, and I can see it recognizing the RAID drives, but then it errors out and tells me that there is no boot disk. I went into the BIOS to see if I could change the boot order (because obviously it's trying to boot from the new hard drive), and I can see that the new drive is set as SLAVE (and I did change the little thingies on the back of the drive to make it slave), but it's not showing anything as the primary boot disk. My SATA drives don't show up at all, so I can't change the boot order. When I physically remove the new drive, the computer starts up no problem and everything is there (thank GOD! lol!) Should I change the new hard drive to be set as MASTER (like move the thingies at the back of it to be MASTER instead of SLAVE)? Will that work? And more importantly, if I try that and it doesn't work, will it mess up my existing set up? Anyone have any other suggestions as to what I should try? Much appreciated!!! |

Set the jumper on the 200GB HDD to CS (cable select) and check that the IDE cable is blue to motherboard, black to HDD and grey left unconnected.

Is your RAID set up directly to the motherboard using the onboard RAID, or do you have a RAID card?

I believe the RAID is set up directly on the motherboard using the onboard RAID.
