Mouse and keyboard conflict on IBM Laptop

My friend gave a an old IBM Notebook because he could not get a mouse to work on it. The trackpointer on the notebook does not work, and the ps2 port is not working right. Sometimes when you plug a mouse into the ps2 port, the mouse is recognized, sometimes not. As a last resort to try to make this thing usable, I bought a serial mouse on ebay. The mouse is a Microsoft serial mouse 2.1A. It was recognized by windows, the drivers loaded from the Windows 98se disk and I thought my problems were over. The mouse works perfectly, now unfortunately the keyboard does nothing. Is there a chance that there is some sort of conflict between the serial port and the keyboard? If I unplug the serial mouse and start the computer, the keyboard works. The laptop is an IBM Thinkpad 310ED, with windows 98se. This thing is driving me nuts!!!! Thank you for any help.

*edit* I started messing with the bios and got it working. Changed the irq and all is good now. Thanks anyway.
