RAM-sticks issues
I can't be sure that can I go and overclock my AMD K6-2 450MHz with MSI-5184 m/b..... And I'm doubtful that the RAMs must be also special for that case... and what's the maximum speed for this overclocked processor?

Look in the bios for any options to change FSB, multipliers, voltages, etc. I found a couple posts that said they'd gotten more than 500mhz out of K6-2's. I believe though that 5.5 is the highest multiplier you can set on a K6-2 (that or 5.0) so 5, maybe 550 is all your going to get. But it depends on board and cooling. If you get a 100mhz bump without frying the chip you should probably feel lucky. It also depends on the bus speed of your motherboard and I dont think many motherboards back than allowed you to change the bus (The one thats holding my K7 550mhz doesnt).
Since you're using older PC-XXX S-DRAM don't bother worry about the RAM. You could probably buy half a dozen, faster, K6-2 processors for the price of 256mb, good quality PC-133 Ram. Last edited by Vigo; 12-02-2004 at 06:38 AM. |

If you tinker around with it though, be careful. Old AMDs get really hot, really easily. Download a windows based temperature program to monitor temps and give yourself plenty of buffer space to allow for inaccurate reports from the program. Ie, if the application says 40c assume 50 or 60 for a little safety precaution.
I don't know how hot a K6 or K6-2 chip can get before cooking. |

The fastest K6 I've heard of is the 550MHz K6-2. I think there may have been a 600MHz model, but I'm not positive.
You might be able to push your 450MHz to 550MHz...but realistically you probably won't be able to go that far with it...maybe 475MHz or 500MHz if you're lucky. The K6 wasn't a very good overclocker. If you do play around with it, make sure you get a better heatsink for it...or at least remove the heatspreader cap from the chip. Honestly, I wouldn't bother. Cricket

Ooo, I see. Then what CPU Temp. monitoring programs should I use? I just calculated - can go through 733MHz - don't know whether this is true or not.
Maybe I need a goooood heatsink or something else.
