What speed will I be able to burn at with this setup
Dell 2100, internal Lite ON DVDRW SOHW 832S VSOE, & external USB 1.1 LG CDRW CED 8080B. Will I be able to 'copy on the fly' (Straight copy) CD's with this setup?? If so, what speed???
Liteon DVDRW SOHW 832S - 40X CD-R / 40X read LG CDRW CED 8080B - 8X CD-R / 32X read |

You will be able to copy on the fly, as in cd to cd, but I don't know if the speed of burning will be the same as writing. If you want Cd to DVD on the fly, that is possible, but I think the CD will read faster than the DVD will burn. But if you use the Liteon as the burner, then you should get decent speeds, depending on the media.

USB 1.1 tops out at 4x burning speed. It will probably be faster copying through a hard drive image using the internal drive as both source and target.

What if I buy a PCI to USB 2.0 card? What speed will I be able to burn at?
I bought a certified USB2.0 external 5.25" box, I paid $43.00 US ($260.00 TT) I tried copy on the fly, it fluctuates from 4X to 2X & buffer at 1%. I didn't expect it to take so long. The USB drive burst rate is 1MB/s (32X read - 8X CD-R - 4X CD-RW LG CDRW CED 8080B 1.04) It rips a CD at 5X, usually rips at 18X. So will the PCI to USB 2.0 card make things faster???? Thanks for the very helpful info PPL

No, that's not what I meant. It's not a matter of reading/writing speed, but transfer rate.
The burner has to be a USB 2.0 device in order to work at USB 2.0 speeds. If the burner is USB 1.1 only (like you said in your first post), then it'll be limited to 4x. .means 4x/4x/4x. The 8x/4x/32x is only possible with USB 2.0, but that doesn't automatically mean that it's an USB 2.0 device. RJ |

Sorry, now I see how it looks when U read it!!!
It's a CD burner I took out from my dell (Internal drive). Today I bought a Certified HI - Speed USB 2.0 5.25" external box & connected the LG CDRW inside it, then to my system which has USB 1.1. So the drive isn't a USB 1.1, it's the USB on the Mboard. & the external USB box is 2.0! Now I think things are cleared up, so will it work better if I buy a PCI to USB 2.0 card???? (Since I don't have 2.0 USB on my Mboard) Thanks

Ah, I see. Yes, since the external USB box is 2.0, connecting it to a USB 2.0 card will enable you to burn at 8x, and also read at 32x, just as much as the drive is able to.

Does Windows ME support USB 2.0, if I buy the USB 2.0 PCI card????
I've done some reading & I don't know if it's the specific card or all, that functions as 1.1 even though it's a 2.0 card under windows ME!!! |

Yes, if you have WinME drivers for the 2.0 card.
