Is it a big difference between.....

Is there a huge performance between the Athlon 64 2800 and the XP 3000(333fsb) cpu?

Looking at a mobo combo and saw the the Athlon 64 and mobo was ionly $50 more. Now this is assuming all other parts were equal. Getting ready to build a new systema and wanted to get the lodown on new CPU's. Haven't upgraded in a while (xp1800+) and knew this would be the place to come.

The main difference between the two is that the Athlon 64 is a 64 bit processor. Other than that you won't notice a huge difference between the two.

Yes - the Athlon 64 is quite a bit better. The AMD Athlon XP line evolved its 32-bit structure to make the Athlon 64 - the processing is much better and more efficient. I'd suggest it.

Besides 64 bit extensions you have an intergrated memory controller (Hyper Transport). The technical "bus" speed is much greater, though not really your traditional front side bus since it isn't located on the motherboard; its within the cpu itself. Huge gains in memory performance over older athlon XP chips because of this.

For 50 bucks it should prove a smart investment.

Sorry to bump this, but how much better would the A64 be in gaming compared to the XP3000 assuming the rest of the system were equal.

Oh yeah, A64 will definetly come up on top. Go with it, you'll be pleased.
