two questions: CPU & RAM
1. What actually makes a different CPU compatible with the motherboards. Example if I have a Northwood motherboard, it could not take prescott right? But both are P4's. Curious
2. Which is faster: 512mb Kingston Value RAM DDR266: CL 2.5-3-3-7 or 512 mb KVR HYNIX BT-D43 ddr 400: CL 3-3-3-8? Both are 512mb. I could not find the timings for the KVR Hynix. That is just an assumtion. and could both RAM's work together using Dual Channel?

the ddr 400 would be faster, ram timings make a differnce, but not that large of a difference
And no they would both have to be either ddr 266 or ddr 400 to run in dual channel mode, if you were to put a stick of 512 of ddr 400 and a stick of 512 of ddr 266, the ddr 400 would be forced to run at the slower speed, which in this case would be the ddr 266 speed. |

sorta like how some of the AMD boards couldn't take winchester cores at first. the bios didn't support it so you have to take an older CPU, flash the BIOS, then install the newer CPU. i will never figure out why manufacturers do this...

I think the determining factor in whether they would work together in Dual Channel is more a question of the motherboard capablility than the memory. Either way, you would be defeating the purpose of running PC3200/DDR400. The ram speed would be limited to the speed of the slower memory installed, in this case the PC2100/DDR266. Plus you run the risk of incompatibility between the different memory. Might not even boot up.

Yes, that I am well aware off. But the price for PC2100 is even expansive than the market PC3200 above. Might as well get higher. I was wondering if I could OC my system higher. With the current Value RAM's I get from 2.8>3.19ghz. From 133>150FSB.
