Question getting rid of this at start up

hi, I have added another harddrive to the little one I have. The computer reconises it and I have formated it. But when I go to start the computer I get this message:

Please select the operating system to start:

1. Microsoft Windows XP Home
2. Microsoft Windows XP Home

When I hit the #1. I get this message:
Microsoft Windows XP Home coould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the file. ( This is the one that I formated, this is the new one, for some reason I couldn't get the computer to reconize it as Master) Unless you can help with that. But I would just be happy to have the computer start up regular.
When I hit the #2. It goes to the windows start page and works fine.

It also gives a option of pressing F8 for more advanced options

HOW DO I GET RID OF THIS AT START UP???????

How do you have the 2 hard drives jumpered? Are you using Master/Slave with a 40 wire ide cable or Cable Selecte (CS) with an 80 wire cable? Either will work. Anything else will probably cause issues. Do you have anything installed on the new drive? It sounds like your system is detecting two installations of XP.

Go into Startup and Recovery options in the advanced tab of System Properties, and pick which default operating system you want to load.

Do I have to delete it or something......I did have a OS on it went I had it in the other computer but I formated it, now it says that there isn't anyting on it. How would I make the larger harddrive the master if it doesn't have anything on it?????? Help

Boot from your CD and follow the directions to start Recovery Console. Then:

Attrib -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini
DEL C:\Boot.ini
BootCfg /Rebuild
Fixboot

or simply delete the faulty boot item from your boot.ini, post it here if unsure> Start>RUN>boot.ini

I know that when I was getting read to install they asked for it also and I couldn't find it so I made these disks: Dos start up disk andwindows xp home edition utility: setup disk. Would that file be on one of these???????

Control Panel - System - Advanced - Startup and Recovery settings. Under Default Operating System click on "Edit". Then edit the boot.ini by deleting one WinXP entry.
