touchpad problems
I have Dell Inspirion 5100 laptop. Couple weeks ago I noticed that Touchpad was not responding well. Looks like it's
lost sensitivity or something. I raised sensitivity with Synaptics software but it almost had no effect. Also it responds a little better if I use two fingers. Has anyone had a problem like that? Am I gonna end replacing the Toouchpad, or I need to clean it somehow? Thanks.

I've seen this on Dell laptops. It's a software issue, one of the Windows security patches, believe it or not.

Inspiron 5100 touchpad problem
I am having the exact same problem and I have no idea what to do about it. Do you know if Microsoft has come out with a solution or for that matter what can be done to remedy the problem?
Thank you for your help. |

Inspiron 5100 Touchpad
I also have the Inspiron 5100, and problems with the touchpad recently.
The mouse stops when I rub (finger jumps forward a little) the touchpad. Increasing the sensitivity helps a little, but still not fixed. Does anyone here have the same problem ? Is this definitly a software issue caused by a Windows patch ?! Thanks ! Matthew |

Does it do the same thing with a USB or PS/2 mouse plugged in?

Under Mouse Properties > General:
Location: plugged into PS/2 mouse port Under Mouse Properties > Advanced Settings: I decreased the Sample Rate and increased the Input Buffer Length, which helps even more. Now I really have to rub hard for the mouse to get stuck/lock-up. I don't have a USB mouse to test. If I did, and it worked, that would not really mean this is a hardware issue, still could be software !? This Inspiron 5100 is less then 2 years old. I can't imagine that the touchpad is going already. I hope this is just a software issue. I emailed Synaptics, so I hope for a response. |

Try wiping your fingertip very gently once or twice on any cloth surface (shirt, pants, etc.) when the touchpad gets erratic. Don't know why but it works for me.
