Upgrading Heatsink

Hello
I am plannning on upgrading my stock amd cooler on my Athlon Xp3200 for one that does not make as much noise. I have the ZALMAN CNPS7000B-Cu picked out, and what i would like to know is when i remove the stock heatsink will i need to clean off the cpu? Will it have the thermal pad residue off of the original heatsink? If it does how will i go about getting it clean and ready for the new heatsink. Thanks for any help.

Yes, you need to clean the CPU before you install the new heatsink.

Use a clean cloth and alcohol and just keep rubbing until it's clean.

If it's really hard to clean, get a non-metallic scrapper and carefully scrap off the hard stuff and then follow with the cloth and alcohol.

Ok, Thanks. should i clean it while its still inserted into the motherboard or should i take it out and clean it . That was probably a stupid question.

You can clean the CPU while it's still installed in the socket, just don't drench it with alcohol. A clean dry rag will get most of the stuff off and then you can follow with a rag lightly moistened with alcohol after.

You can use a coffee filter instead of a rag. Coffee filters are good because they're "lintless" and will clean the surfaces without leaving anything behind.
