OC AMD Athlon XP 3200+

I have an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ CPU that I would like to overclock but I have heard that these processors do not OC very well. I was wondering if anyone has successfuly OC one of these without an expensive cooling system.

From what I hear it's a dead end street. Should've just gotten the 2500+ or 2600+ and OC'd to 3200+. Would've saved you about 100 bucks!

Well, from the sound of it there may be some hope for overclocking. Here is my system.

Asus A7N8X E-Deluxe MOBO...AMD Athlon XP 3200 + CPU...Chaintech GForce FX 5900 xt Video Card...2x256MB PDP PC 2700...Thermaltake 480W PSU...WesternDigital 80GB.

Oh... Thanks Killuminati for the recommendation but, that obviously doesn't do me any good.

the only way youll be able to OC your system is to get some faster memory. as a matter of fact, your memory is crippling your system right now since its PC2700...which natively supports 333FSB. you should get some decent PC3200 for that system...atleast 512MB.

definately get more and faster ram for starters. Win xp can barely run at 256 MB. This will increase the speed of your computer exponentially.

I've got the same cpu, and from what I've been told, the Athlon XP3200+ is already as fast as it will go. Like Tin said, I've also seen people getting a bit faster, but the fsb is locked on this (or at least mine) cpu, so it's hard to get more out of it. I have read articles on unlocking the fsb by messing with the pins, but that's too hard core for me. I'm just going to upgrade to a Althon XP 64 3200+. I've heard that that cpu can get close to 2.6 and 2.7 ghz.

I made a mistake when listing my RAM, I have 2x256 PDP 2700. I do plan on getting some better memory. At the time when I got the memory that I have I didn't know that I should have PC3200. What are the benefits of a 64 bit processor?

its not the 64-bit support that makes A64 good...its the on-chip memory controller. instead of needing a northbridge to control memory operation, the CPU does it itself. having no northbridge eliminates the "middle man" when the CPU talks to the memory.

If your gonna OC the 3200+ (400 fsb) then get some pc3500 or pc4000 so that you can push it farther than 400. but make sure you get quality ram that OCes well like OCZ and such. some Ram like Crucial wich is very stable , doenst like to be pushed.
