Installing Intel xeon Processors and heat sink

my instruction manual that came with my processor is very limited. Intel online will not give me the full manual unless i am a certified installer. Can anyone help

its been a while sence I built servers, but if I remember right, that cpu comes as a block that slides into a slot type assembly holder and there is no real problem to install it

Exactly which Xeons are you installing? Are they the newer Socket 603 models? Or are they the older Slot 2 cartridge type?

socket 604 intel xeon processors 3.4 GHz, 800 MHz system bus and 1 Mb L2 cache

What motherboard are you using?

From what I can see on some server motherboard pictures, there is a locking lever on the socket. The heatsinks look they're held down with some spring clips that are attached to brackets that are screwed to the motherboard.

what about thermal grease. there is a square of somthing on the heat sink that i presume to be just that

also my fan power connectors are 3 prong. my motherboard has 4 prong. there is a slot however that would direct my prongs into 3. the open prong is the ground is that kosher

That's the thermal pad. Don't remove it.

Sorry, I'm not sure about the 4 pin fan header on the motherboard...never seen one with 4 pins before.

No, just use the thermal pad.

You can only use one or the other...not both at the same time or your temps will really get high.
