Upgrade Questions

Hi,

I have a quick question re: motherboards. I am wanting to upgrade from an EPoX 4G4A+ i845g 533 MHz. The CPU is P4 2.6 GHz and uses 1GB of PC2100. I would like to use the same memory and CPU.

I've done a lot of reading in all of the forums (my compliments as there is a lot of great info), and I've narrowed it down to two boards that are on sale at a local store in Houston.

Asus P4P800E-DLX 865PE ATX (uses PC 2100 and accepts P4 2.6)

MSI 865PE Neo2PFS Platinum. (uses PC 2100 and accepts P4 2.6).

Question 1: Which is the better board?

Question 2: I, however, read about the 915p chipset and 775 socket. There are a couple of boards on sale of this kind. Do these accept the PC2100 mem and the P4 2.6?

Question 3: Should I spend the extra money for this 915p board or stick to the 865PE chipset ones?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards, js

your processor would not be compatible with the 915 chipsets neither with the pc2100 ram , the best option would be the 875chipset

I'd have to say the ASUS.

The PC2100 might work, but the 2.6GHz P4 won't fit in the LGA775 Socket.

If you want to keep the 2.6GHz P4 and the PC2100 DDR RAM, stick with the 865PE motherboard.

What do you use your computer for?

It is my kids computer, which they use mostly to; surf the net; instant messaging; basic homework assignments; and listening to music and watching dvd movies.
