Additional HD

I currently have a Dell 4600 computer. I added a smaller cheap HD to backup different items like My Documents etc. When I installed the small HD, there was another connector on the cable at the main HD that I just connected to the smaller HD. Everything worked great, and I frequently make a backup. I just received my newer computer, another Dell, model 4700. I planned to take out the smaller HD from the older computer (4600) and ADD it to the newer computer (4700), but the connections are different. The newer computer has that Sata HD, and does not have the flat cable like the other computer. There are no other slots on the motherboard that I could just run the smaller HD to either. The new computer does have a CD Rom reader, and I plan to add a DVD burner. That does not appear to be a problem. IS it possible to just remove the cable that goes to the CD Rom, attach it to the smaller HD, and copy my information to the new computer ?
Even if I could do that, I would still like to install the smaller HD in my computer to use it as a backup, just as I did in the older computer. Is there an adapter or something I can use to connect that smaller HD ? Many thanks for all suggestions. Mike

Yes, that is possible. You could order a Promise ATA controller card from Newegg, install it and hook the drive to it.

Or you could sell your small HDD on the trading post and buy your self a nice SATA drive!

The new computer should have the two IDE channel, just get hold of a 40 lead IDE ribbon cable and connect your smaller HDD to the secondary IDE channel.

connect your rom to your main hdd as a slave. you can then use your free ide cable to connect your smaller hdd on its own as a master. jumper settings for master and slave will be on the hardware.check them out.

Another option would be to get an external hard drive housing, put the small hard drive in it and then connect it to the computer through the USB port and save your data when necessary. Saves wear and tear on the hard drive since it's not always running when the computer is on.

The external housings are available in USB 2.0, FireWire (IEEE1394) and USB/FireWire combos. Power is external through a power adapter.
