Winxp/Printer USB connect Problem

I built a pc and have winxp Pro on it. Problem is the Apollo 2150 printer uses a USB cable and it will not send things to the printer. I was getting an error that said something about the connection to the printer. I have no Idea how to configure the usb port for this printer. I remember seeing something about virtual usb? What would this be? In device manager it lists 6 items relating to usb 3 that say root and 3 that say something about host controller. How do I know if I have the setting correct here?

Do you have a USB device that you can plug into the USB port to make sure the driver are working?

Login is "drivers", password is "all"

The driver must be installed BEFORE you connect the USB cable.

I had the printer plugged in and the wizzard took over from there and loaded the drivers I thought, I did what the papers with the printer stated and then tried the printer. I believe it says something about the port location when I bring up the printer properties (virtual) but in the my computer device manager it does not tell me what is the port it is using? Apollo used Hp drivers and they were in the os info when I hooked up the printer all looked to work and still it will not work. Guess this is what happens when you loose the original driver disc upon moving houses.

I have no other usb devices to test! Is there a way to test comunication?

Go to the control Panel click printer; make sure your printer has check mark as default.

Here's how to find the Driver, I just search yahoo "apollo 2150 driver" the driver seem to be an HP. GLC has the right link, DriveGuide will the driver or link

When I tried all suggestions, nothing still. Printer is listed and check mark is there, Went to Printer Properties and then the port tab and it tried to configure port and it said something like an error during configuring and this is not supported. I deleted the usb's from the device manager, unplugged the printer, turned off the computer and rebooted. The usb's reinstalled as I thought they would then I tried the printer again and still nothing. I do get a message that says the print job failed with no real error message to say what the cause could be. The driver is loading from the Winxp on the system.


I never seen the word virtual in the device manager under the USB when working on a machine running win98, is this normal or is it from the installing that caused the problem and made it not really recognize the USB's ports?

Strowhat, you have done every thing right! So it time to ask hows the weather, in the room where the computer is, if its too dry cable can build a charge that can block data. Disconnect the cable for a day and retry or try a new USB cable.

say what ?
never heard of such a theroy, where did you hear of such a thing as being too dry causeing problems with usb ?

Stacie charge was a problem with ext. SCSI cable that was unshielded, if you have a clear type of USB cable you can see that it has a ground shielded and not have that type of problem. Can you run a test on the printer without it being connection to the computer?

I have no idea how to do a test with the printer not hooked up? I have another usb printer and will have to switch it to the machine running win xp if I have the driver for it in xp, will check that in the am and see what I get! Thanks for everything so far as I am learning.

as far as I know, scsi cable is simaler to ide cable and no shielding is required.
and all usb cables are shielded.

the drivers and software must be installed before the printer is connected to the computer I belive, most usb devices require that.

I went by the printers quick start guide and it said to plug in the cable with the computer off and then start and install the software when the wizard came up, without the disc I just told it I had no drivers and xp drivers were used off the computer. I was able to pick the correct driver and everything so I am just going to go back to square one on this one and try deleting everything printer wise and try it again. This is a major learning experience and I am hoping the end result will be a working printer.

I think I may be on to something, checked with a friend running win xp pro and they have a usb printer. Seems they have the bi-directional box checked in the properties part under ports. Mine does not and will not allow it either.

Could I be getting this error from the loading of drivers for the USB port possibly? Is there a way to make this box checkable if I reloaded hardware and still get this error? Do I need to go into the Bios and check the usb info?

This may be the problem, never sure but I hope I can resolve it.

What's your exact motherboard model? I'm thinking you may need an updated chipset driver.

I have a Soyo SY-7VDA Socket 370 MOBO with the via pro0266 chipset.

If it would need an up-date I would need some assistance to get me through that since I have never done anything like that yet!

Unzip it - there's very likely a readme in it to tell you how to install it. If there's a setup.exe in there, that's all you need, just run it.

Seems like I maye have a problem here getting the USB's to work period. I need another usb device to try and make it work maybe.

Still searching for an answer so all help is appreciated.

strowhat i have xp-pro also with a usb printer, as you said in properties -ports, mine reads all the ports 2-3 etc and the last one is virtual printer port (name of printer)
then under that enable bidirectional support is checked. have you checked in device manager under usb controller to see if usb printing support is listed? may be that you need to install or update the usb drivers. i'm not an expert this is just a thought.

I seeing your USB ports as USB 1.1. the manual did not say USB 2.0

Well, tried all the fixes and checks of the BIOS and still nothing will allow me to check the bi-directional under port in the printer properties, Must be the install of the printer that is causing the problem. Also comes up with an error occured during configuration and this is not supported if you click on reconfigure for for the USB port.
When I delete the printer and bitware fax is default it has bi-directional checked but it is not under a USB connection?

Every try to configure the port or up-date a driver is without success and I am left with the only other thing to do is try my kids printer and see what I can do with it since it's an HP and I have the disc. Unlike the apollo that I lost the disc.

Anyone have another Idea?

I think you will have better luck with the real HP. Apollo printers were HP's budget line and are no longer supported, I think you may have a white elephant there. It may be usable on an older operating system with drivers you find on the web but it sure looks to me like XP doesn't like it at all. It's also possible the printer itself has developed a defect, they weren't built with longevity in mind.
