newly built PC trying to boot from CD?

argh. i just put together a new PCl salvaging the floppy drive and CD drive from an old one. i'm using an ATX board.
i've checked the boot order thing, and it's set to floppy first, but when i boot it checks the CD drive, and when i put the WIN98 CD in, it doesn't work.

can anybody help? also, the floppy drive light is on all the time. could this mean i've plugged it in wrong? i've tried a couple of different drives in there, and a different cable.

thanks

tom

If the floppy light is on all the time, the cable is plugged in backwards. Change the boot order to CD-Rom first. How old is your CD-Rom, not all of the older ones are capable of booting from a CD.

the CD drive is about 5 years old

i was using bits from an old computer.

and i'm sure i've plugged the floppy drive in correctly, with the red stripe aligned to pin 1, but i'll double check.

thanks

ok, i tried the new CD drive from another computer...

but it still says 'disk boot failure'. i can hear the disc spin up. i'm using a backup CD of windows 98, and i can't find the original. i would like it to boot from floppy. also, i checked the floppy cable and it definitely is plugged in correctly. is there a problem with the motherboard?

cheers
tom

If it's not an exact copy of the Win9x CD it won't be bootable. Exact copy or just the files?

i assume it's an exact copy?

i've used it to load windows on my other machine, but that was booting from floppy. would i be able to make a startup CD using my cd writer if i copied files from my boot disk?

I just had this problem recently, turned out to be a bad floppy cable.

Not all floppy drives have pin 1 towards the power connector, Panasonic drives are reversed. Have the end of the cable with the twist on it towards the floppy drive. Try it one way and if that doesn't work, turn it around.

Okay, try this:

1. set the boot order to CD first
2. set all drives to AUTO

If this works, look where your cdrom is connected and leave this at AUTO, and reset the other ones to the old values.

Hope this helps.

The critical part of a floppy cable is the motherboard end - make SURE that pin 1 is at the stripe. Then you have a 50-50 chance of being right at the other end - and the A drive must be at the other end, after the twist, not in the middle. If the floppy light stays on, the cable is reversed at the floppy or the cable is defective.

A 5 year old CD drive is not likely to be bootable, period.

glc, there are old cd-rom-drives which are bootable.
My old Pentium 90 with 8x Gold Star CD-ROM from late 1996 boots from cd.

On the other end of that spectrum RJ, I have a 12x Panasonic that will not boot from a CD.

Well. . yes I know, not all old drives are bootable.
But it never hurts to check whether it is or not

12x you said.
This Toshiba 12x from my friend. . . will it boot ? I had it for quite a while. No, I can't remember, I'm gonna ask him
