Tranfer from one hdd to another

hey i just bought a new gateway computer, i was going to take my other hdd out of my old computer and plug it to the new computer as a add. hdd and tranfer what i want onto the new hdd. then remove it. but.....the new computer has a small round cable with 7 pins i belive, and my old hdd has the flat ribbon(40 pins). is there any way i can still do what i started out to do??

Sounds like the new machine is using a SATA hdd. Does the mobo have a standard IDE connector (probably blue). If it does, you should be able to move the old drive WITH the ribbon cable. Just make sure the bios is set to boot from the SATA drive.

thanks for ur reply, and yes it does (Parallel ATA IDE Interface) but......it has the dvd burner and cd rom plugged into it.would this work....unplug these and temp. hook up old hdd to tranfer what i want off it?? but theres is another one above it the Floppy Disk Drive Connector. that will not work right?!?!

The floppy connector is 34 pin. PATA is 40 pin. Yes, you can disconnect one of your optical drives temporarily to do the transfer, I do it all the time.

thanks a Lot GLC for ur reply!! as i was getting ready to hook the hdds up to the dvd burner connection it dawn on me about the "master or slave jump" settings on the hdds.. which should they be set as??

Just check the jumper of the DVD burner and set the hard drive the same way. If it's Master, use master (that would be the end of the ide cable.) If Slave, use slave (middle connector) and if it's Cable Select (CS) set the hard drive the same way. Should work fine.

WoooHooo.....all is tranfered. THANKS panama red and glc!! i just did one hdd at a time and used the slave setting on them and all went great again thanks guys!!!
