Can't execute programs from DVD-RW

I recently purchased a SD-R5372 DVD-RW drive and am having problems
getting it to work. I am running Windows XP Pro SP2. The drive is
seen in Windows and shows up as a lettered drive. Windows correctly recognizes it as a Toshiba SD-R5372 and identifies it as a DVD-RW drive. The drive recognizes and mounts CDs, CD-Rs, and DVDs and allows me to
Explore the contents of the disc and even open files contained on the
disk. I have also been able to open audio CDs with the drive and can
copy files from the drive to the HD and rip music files to mp3 using
the drive. I can also view text files off discs. However, I can't seem to run any executables (at least all Setup programs, I haven't been able to test other executables) using the
drive. Every time I try to, for instance, install Nero using the
drive, the disk mounts, identifies the disc as the Nero disc, and
attempts to run Setup. But then, I just get an error message saying
the MultiInstaller MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs
to close. As before, even after that message, I can Explore the CD
and look at the contents, I just can't run Setup. This is the same
for any other CD I use in the drive. Anytime I attempt to run an
executable, I get an error and can't proceed. If I copy the executable to the HD, I can run it fine off the HD. Any ideas? I have tried
everything from reinstalling Windows both with and without SP2, have
changed the drives master/slave setting around with the other CD-ROM I
have in this machine, updated the firmware to TU53, replaced the IDE
cables, and changed IDE channels. Windows reports the drive is
working correctly, and for all I can tell, it is except for not
letting me run executables. Anyway, any help would be apprecated. The other CD-ROM on the IDE channel is working fine.
