hey, socket question

hey guys, just curious as to know I was looking to buy a new motherboard and cpu, and let's say I wanna get a socket a processor athlon xp but the motherboard can handle socket a just it says compatible with athlon/duron but not athlon xp.... so wouldn't it be able to work since it's still socket a?

I've heard of people messing with jumper settings on older mobo's and it ended up working with other cpu's that weren't listed as compatible but were socket a type's, but with newer boards would bios pick it up? and if not is there a way to tell which motherboard can handle a cpu not listed as compatible but same socket type?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, if it says its "Socket A for Athlon/Duron" (or some call it Socket 462) then any Athlon should work in it. AMD used Socket A forever seems like, and they didn't change until recently when the AMD 64's came out. Some mobos will only list up to a certain speed, but you can usually check with the manufacturer to see if they have a BIOS update for it. Sometimes a BIOS flash is all it takes to let a board rated up to a certain cpu speed work with a cpu that's a little faster, as long as its still the same Socket A format.

Check the motherboard manufacturer's website. If it's not listed as compatible it won't work or it's not supported by the company. You may be able to mess around with 3rd party BIOSes or hardware mods, but do that at your own risk. You're better off buying a compatible motherboard and processor.
