The last two I have used have been THIS ONE. Good design without all the flash.

USB 2.0 is very fast. USB 1.1 is very slow. If you only have USB 1.1, get a combo USB/Firewire housing and get a Firewire card - Firewire is a lot more stable than USB and is just as fast as USB 2.0.

The motherboard specs (available on the makers site, if you know the model number) should tell you, and programs might. (I looked through Everest and couldn't find anything).

The screws also came out once, and (I have a 5" enclosure) was banging around in my bag. I am able to access all data (~10Gb) on the drive, all diagnostics and tests come up fine. I would not recomend treating a hard drive like this, but it just shows that they should be able to withstand some shaking etc without damage to data (although this will vary from drive to drive). I would also not recomend throwing the drive around etc.
