Do all hardware devices have ROM chips for Flash firmware upgrades?
I have a BTI DVD 8 speed drive recorder which was having some trouble making backup DVDs so I was asked to upgrade the firmware of the drive from B080 to B180. I had to flash it to do so just like you might flash the bios to upgrade that. Now the DVD drive records perfectly. I just didn't realize that DVD drives or any kind of hard drives have a ROM chip to flash in new firmware. I know that modems like the Global Village ones have Rom chips to flash bios but never new hard drives and DVD drives have that. So do all hardware devices like printers or video cards have ROM chips to do flash firmware upgrades?
Maybe its time to check for and do flash firmware upgrades on all my hardware devices. |

Not sure about printers, but Video cards do have a BIOS, too. Some video cards will show you the BIOS version on startup, before the PC's BIOS shows up. But I don't think you'll ever have to upgrade that.
Firmware for DVD burners should be upgraded as newer firmware supports more media, or has better support for some media. DVD-ROM drives also have firmwares, and the old CD-ROM and CD-RW drives also did. I think hard drives also have firmwares, but they can't be upgraded. But really, DVD-ROM/DVD burner and mainboard BIOS are the only ones that you'll ever need to upgrade. RJ

Personaly and I have seen glc and a few others with this opinion, unless something is not working or not working correctly, firmware upgrades fall into the "don't fix it it if aint broke" catagory. Some firmware upgrades can actually render your equipment nonworking if they are not done correctly and remember 99% of firmware upgrades once done cannot be reversed.

Harry, rjfvillarosa is right. If it ain't broke, dont't fix it! Updating just to update can be more
trouble than you want. If you are having an issue (known) with your hardware, and an update will correct it,then by all means update---with care. If you're having an issue (unknown),do a search and try to find others with the same problem. There could be a software(program) fix available. Beware that incorrect or botched firmware fixes will usually render the hardware useless, and it will have to be sent back to the mfg. for bios or chip reflash or replacement. Sorry, dude. Didn't mean to scare you,but I've been through it,and it's PLENTY'O'AGGRAVATION to right the situation.Hope I helped......DoomLord

This thread is over a year old, Doom. Someone has bumped it with a request that I haven't a clue what he/she is talking about.
