USB 2.0 question
I was poking through my pile recently, I have an ASUS P4C800 Deluxe MB, which supports USB 2.0. Intel 3.2E CPU.
So, I'm in Device manager and right click on the USB universal host controller and notice that they don't show (USB 2.0 Hub Controller) In the Location line under general. So I click all of the universal host controllers and none of them show (USB 2.0 Hub Controller) in their location line. I have the SP2 update and run XP Pro. Shouldn't they all read USB 2.0? I go into BIOS setup, USB Config, and see that the USB Legacy is set to auto, USB 2.0 Controller is enabled and USB 2.0 Controller Mode is set to High Speed. I'm confused. Do the peripherals themselves have to be 2.0 for it to read 2.0 in Device manager? Is there a place to D/L the USB 2.0 drivers to the comp? Shouldn't they have been included in the XP CD or in the SP1 and or SP2 updates? Any help will be greatly appreciated |

The controller that says "enhanced" is the 2.0 controller - and there will only be ONE.

As long as your USB 2.0 devices seem to work properly, I wouldn't worry. As you can see from the screenshot from my device manager, it has one instance where it says USB2 Enhanced Host Controller. That's what you're looking for.

The controller that says enhanced does not say 2.0, it says
"Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" My board supports 8 USB 2.0 connectors, 4 in the rear and 4 up front. What info I've read so far says that it should read "USB 2.0 Hub Controller" in the Location Line. As for all the USB devices working properly, I don't know, about 15% of boot ups gets me a device unknown message in systray. If I check it, it says no driver set for this device, (usually the APC or the Camera Docker) I know my HP Multiuse , APC, and pretty sure theCamera docker is 1.1. However, the External HD is 2.0. |

Umm... if there is hardware w/o drivers, usually it has a yellwo question mark in the device manager. Another thing you can do is to download sisoftware's Sandra benchmarking utility. It grabs motherboard specs for you, and mine displayed 4 2-port USB 1.1 controllers and USB 2.0 control for 8 ports.
Are you SURE it doesn't say USB2 Enhanced Host? I checked for USB 2.0 anything in device manager, found nothing, but then found it in Windows's System Info panel. I then went back to look for it in my device manager and saw it where I didn't see it before. It's very discrete. It doesn't say USB 2.0 it says USB2, after a list of it saying USB so there is a chance that you just didn't catch it as I had. I don't know how else to determine this, but I didn't feel comfortable w/o answering with at least some suggestions. When I installed my Abit board, I didn't have USB 2.0 functionality until I installed SP1. Hmm... here's a good suggestion: If you haven't already done so, goto the Windows Update site. Should be at Start - All Programs - (near the top of the list). USB2.0 may be enabled with one of the optional windows updates. ~STU~ |

"Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" *IS* USB 2.0.

Thanks GLC.
Stuey, I checked into sys info and didn't find anything there mentioning USB 2.0. or USB2 in device manager. In sys info, it did show 3 of the 4 devices using USB, it was the camera that didn't get shown, even though it was lit on the docker. I activated it (connect to computer) and the comp acknowledged it, it then showed up in the USB components in sys info. In general I suppose I should be happy, everything logs most of the time without rebooting, (usually do to XP not loading all the junk I have on it), and almost always the USB components, although it seems to occasionally forget the NIS. I just figured that if it wasn't running at the 2.0 level that I was missing out on speed I was supposed to be getting on my peripherals. I was reading this months PCWorld and one of the articles mentioned the USB controllers and what the device should read if 2.0 was running on the pile. None of my devices looked like the snap of the Host Controller Properties window. |

You can very easily do a test with your external hard drive. Disable your real time virus scanner, copy a large file, time the transfer and do the math. USB 1.1 maxes out at 12 megabits per second, 2.0 is 480 mbps. These rates are theoretical max. Remember, 8 bits to a byte - if you can push 100 megabytes across in less than a minute, it's running 2.0.

I should have paid attention to the last Ghosting time for the drive. I want to say it took something like 24 minutes to transfer about 10 gigabytes to it but I'm not sure, the last time I did it was in Oct. As soon as I'm sure that everything is going well with the SP2 again, I'm going to do another Ghost

If you transferred 10 gigs in 24 minutes to your USB hard drive, I would definitely think that it was going using USB 2.0 protocol. Additionally, when you connect a high speed USB 2.0 device to a USB 1.1 port or a USB 2.0 port w/o drivers installed such that it is using native USB 1.1 support, there will be a notification in your system tray saying that you are using a high speed device in a slower port. This happened to me when I built my system and installed Windows but not yet SP1 which enables USB 2.0 support.
