windows won't start
Hi guys, i just bought a new PSU of 400W after the last one (300W) nearly destroyed my graphics card due to overheating. But i'm ecnountering now a new problem, everytime i start the computer, it goes into its normal start sequence and then when windows is loading it shuts off and restart again and i get this black screen of death telling me that windows failed to start (and that this is maybe because of a software or hardware change, it then lists the start options available), this happens every time i start the computer but after a few times it starts again normally asif nothin happenned.
I'm sure this is a simple problem to solve but it is very annoying, please anyone advise.... |

What are the complete system specs by brand and model?
Does it boot into Safe Mode? What brand is the 400 watt PSU? Cricket

Sorry i didn't post the pc specs on my first post, i didnt' think it would be relevant due to the nature of my problem...
It's an P4 3.2ghz on an Intel Motherboard (i don't have this one's specs) 1 gig of ram (2 chips) 80 gb HDD ATI Radeon 9800 256 Mb Ram (omega driver installed) A-Open 400 Watts PSU OS: Windows XP SP2 It's not starting in safe mode, when it does start, it starts normally. But when it doesnt it give me options 'to start with the last configuration that worked' or 'to start normally' and i choose normally, and then it would start...very weird really. |

The computer itself is starting up okay, it just won't always load Windows?
Is the computer overclocked? Was it ever overclocked? What was the exact problem that made you get a bigger power supply? When it does load Windows successfully, do you scan for viruses, spyware and trojans with updated definitions? Have you changed the IDE or SATA cables yet? Cricket

thanx for the replies Cricket...
The computer seems to go into a normal startup sequence, then when loading windows, it completely shuts down and restarts, until it goes online normally. The computer is not overclocked, nor has it been. There aint no viruses on trojans either. Check this out though, since i was a 100% sure its a hardware small problem and after playing abit with the cables, i noticed that the case fan isint always turning when i start the computer, sometimes it does sometimes not. When it doesn't a small push with my finger and it will work. So i disconnected its cable and guess what...? The computer is now starting normally and with no hiccups! i'm gonna change the fan, but why would a faulty fan do that to a computer at startup? Was it pullin too much amps when it was tryin hard to turn and sucked the power from other components which made the system shut down and restart? |

If the case fan wasn't turning, I'd take a guess that there was no or not enough heat exhaust being pushed out of the case, causing it to overheat, shutdown and restart.

Was the fan connected to the motherboard or to the power supply? Cricket

the problem is back again !Last night it was running smoothly each time i turned the pc on, but today morning i got the same problem, but only once. the other start ups went ok. I really hate that. The fan was connected to the power supply. I'm really at loss here... |

It sounds like a flakey power supply, its possible the seized fan has damaged something in what was not a good power supply to start with, try changing out the power supply again.

If it has a bad component and slipped through a crack in quality control, $200 or $20 is meaningless.
