USB port not working

I have an old emachines 366c machine that im trying to get running for my mother. I upgraded the HD to 4 gb, and the ram to 2 sticks of 128 mb sdram. Windows 2000 installed fine, ive even got it updatedand all (i pur a NIC in it).

It has 1 USB port on the back, i tried sticking 2 diff usb flash drives in it, nothing, even when i run the add new hardware wizard, it finds nothing. The device manager shows everything installed fine, andeven shows the USB port, but doesnt show the usb drives.

I tried a few other random usb devices, none worked. I rebooted and checked the BIOS to see if USB Was enabled and it was.

So i'm stumped, i figure i can put a PCI USB card, but id rather not spend money. My mother uses a USB flash drive so i need a working USB port.

Any ideas?

There is something simple you can do, and I am sure you already did this. But, did you have a look inside to visually make sure the USB cord was still connected the USB header on the MB?

I also had the same problem with a fresh build of mine; the guy had wired the USB to the header, in reverse. It works now, though. Did it work before the upgrades and such?

this usb port is directly mounted on the mobo, so this is not a possibility.

Try connecting a USB joystick?

USB drivers are Windows drivers. It seems like if device manager shows USB as working, you should be okay.

Maybe the flash drives need their own drivers or software to work, similar to a digital camera?

Stick a USB joystick on there and see if Windows spots it.
