dell laptop gone black
Friend has an Inspiron 600 Dell laptop, just over 1 1/2 years old. The screen has gone, for a better lack of words, black. But you can still see the icons and desktop if you hold a light upto it. And it still works. It's like the backlight went out. Called Dell and they said it would be $699.00 to fix!!! Can buy a new one for $697. Any suggestions on what the problem might be?

I worked on a Gateway desktop that had this problem a month ago, the guy was trying to get rid of programs that he never used, and uninstalled his video driver.
Put the hard drive in another pc, back up everything, put the hdd back in the Dell and reinstall windows. That's what I ended up doing, actually, I showed him how to do it cause he allready owed me $40. . He's paid up now though, and a bit wiser.I'd try a fresh install before I spent any money on it. A fresh install never hurts anyway.

Before the fresh install check to make sure that it's not just a contrast or brightness setting. Also, if you go into setup does the bios also have the dark look are can you see it normally? If you can see the bios you might have a corrupt display driver so you would need to reinstall the drivers for your video card. Worst case you can check ebay for a replacement LCD screen if you deem yours defective. HTH

The dell website has the service manual for my C600 which shows how to break the computer down. It sounds like you have a bad backlight, inverter board, or flex cable.

Trust me go to ebay for replacement. My daughters ps2 on the motherboard went on her 8200 desktop and for the heck of it I called dell, for a price on a replacement board. The women told me $900 my reply was "what kind of crack are you smoking?" Even thou I used the usb, I still decided to check ebay for one. Found one brand new still in package for $50.....
