Will I still get a beep code if the mobo is fried?

I've been trying to track down a weird computer problem, and had thought maybe the motherboard was fried, but when I turn the comp on I get a beep code (memory problem, but I've tried sticks of memory that I know work and still can't get it to work). A friend told me that if the mobo was fried, I shouldn't hear a beep code at all, and I just wanted some verification...if that's the case, then maybe I'll try messing with the memory some more (even though I've spent hours trying different combinations already).

Thanks,
Leafi

Edit: The computer is an HP Pavillion 553x. Without any memory (the video card was out during this), the computer gives me 1 long beep; and the monitor stays in the amber mode. If I have a stick of memory in (I've tried a few different sticks that I know work) it spins up briefly, and then dies. I've tested the PSU, and it seems to be fine...(I jumped it be connecting the 14 pin (I think, I was told how to do it) to a ground, and it runs just fine). Video card in or out doesn't seem to matter.

Exactly what kind of problem are you having? It sounds as if the computer isn't booting up.

Yeah, if the motherboard is fried, you won't get any beeps. But the motherboard could be defective and still give you beeps.

No, that doesn't tell you if the power supply is working 100% correctly, it just means it can start up and give power to the fan. I'd swap in another HP compatible power supply to test with.

Alright, thanks. I'll try hooking it up to another PSU I have for starters. I'm wondering if the memory bank is damaged or something, since without memory I get a beep code, but if a stick of memory is in the fans just spin for about 2 seconds and then everything stops.

Thanks,
Leafi

Yeah, it sounds like your RAM went bad. Do you have any spares you can install to test with?

I tried with another PSU, got the same exact results. I've tried a few different sticks of memory in it (I know they're working because they're fine in our other computer) and it's always the same thing. With memory in, the fans spin up and then it dies. With no memory in either bank, I get a beep code. I've also taken the mobo out of the case and tried it on a non-conductive surface, with only the bare essentials hooked in. I'm at my wits end.

Thanks,
Leafi

Sounds like your motherboard might have gone south, forgive me if I'm wrong though. Just out of curiousity, when you tried the different sticks of RAM, were they matching brands?

I'm pretty sure they're from different brands. One of them is Ultra, but the other two are back in this comp so I can't check the brands on them. My boyfriend and I have pretty much decided to move up our plans and build our first (gulp) computer within the next few weeks. Now all I have to do is pick out the mobo and cpu.

Thanks for the help,
Leafi
