cpu & ram lower number????

i purchased a amd athlon xp 2500+, and installed a 256 mb ram card.... now that i have my computer up and running, my computer, in the "system" part of the control panel on windows xp, says that i have a AMD athlone xp 1900+ 1.48ghz, and only 192 MB ram... how's that possible? the cpu chip even said 2500 on it... this is my first built computer, and other computers i've owned have all had intel in them, and not quite sure about the ram issue either :-P

Do you have onboard video? If so It may use 64 meg memory, which would give you the 192 reading. What motherboard do you have? IS your multiplier and FSB set properly in the BIOS? What type RAM is it (PC2100, PC2700, etc.)

about the RAM I had the same thing you probably have a 64M onboard video card in your MOBO.
about the CPU I don't know much about AMD.

Your motherboard is most likely set to the wrong FSB. What mobo are you using? Some are adjustable in the bios while others use an extenal dip switch. When you change cpu's it is best to reset the cmos too. This allows the mobo to correctly detect your new processor. The correct fsb for your processor is 166 by the way.

my motherboard, the box says "Chaintech Summit Series 7vif4 via km400+vt8235, and yes it came with onboard video, but i'm planning on installed a video card today so i can use my dvi hookup on my monitor* i'll look in my book and see how to change that setting. these parts are both brand new, i just built myself a new computer *didn't want to fork out the money to buy a pre-built one*.

i found, in my BIOS, under the DRAM clock/drive control, it says "current FSB Frequency 133 MHz, but it's grayed out, i can't change it. but then, under there is DRAM Clock, it is currently set on "By SPD" but has options of 133 MHz and 166 MHz, is that were i change the FSB? i'm a total newbie but, but if it gets my cpu where it's supposed to be that'd be great

Just checked your mobo manual on line and your fsb is set extenally using jumper JP3. You should find the proper setting (166) in your manual. The online manual has it pictured on page 20. The DRAM clock is for your memory speed. Just leave it set to "By SPD". It will properly detect your memory speed.
