will it fit?

I am building a new pc and I was wondering if my old memory would fit in this motherboard:http://www.pcchipsusa.com/prod-m863gv15.asp

The memory is 128mb dimm sdram pc100

Either way I was eventually going to get this memory:http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...220-026&depa=0

What do you think of that memory?

system specs:
athlon xp2700
westdig72rpm40gig

The memory you have chosen is made by a great brand and you shouldnt have any problems. Although, you should try to find the motherboards QVL (Qualified Vendor List) and try to match the board up with the RAM PCChips recommends. I would believe you shall be fine with what you have, but that is just a simple suggestion.

Why you would want to use your old memory of PC100 in a new system is my question? The only way the RAM would fit is if it was 184 pin. I dont think SDRAM is 184 pin I think it is 168 pin. So the answer would be definately be NO!

Also, do you have to get that specific board? What is you expense limit on buying a new board?

No, your PC100 will not even fit in the slots, much less work. That board (which I recommend you do NOT buy, by the way - don't cheap out on a motherboard, it's too important a component) requires DDR.

No, I don't have to get that board but for the price and everything included I figured I couldn't go wrong. It has the onboard audio, video, and lan im lookin for and it supports 333fsb which I thought would workout great with my athlon xp 2700.

What board do you suggest and what are the reasons you guys steer clear of my $36.00 mobo

PCChips motherboards are know for being unstable and quirky. As with any build the motherboard is the one of most important components to having a good reliable computer.

You get what you pay for. PC Chips is the bottom of the barrel, they use cheap components, and quality control and reliability is not good. It may very well work fine, but the odds of it being stable and long term reliable aren't that great - and the odds of it being defective out of the box are too high for my trust. All it takes is one shipping bill for a RMA to negate your savings.

An extra 15 bucks will get you a MUCH better board.

Ditto! You get what you pay for!

Memory

• 2 x 184-pin DIMM sockets support two 2.5V DDR SDRAMs (DDR333/266)
• Maximum memory : 2 GB

If you would have look at the mobo specs for the memory, you would have seen that it only takes DDR (333/266) If you want to use SDRAM you would have to get a mobo that takes either SDRAM or DDR, then again, I don't think PC100 would even run. I think you would need at least PC133.

Save your money up and get a mobo and memory at the same time.

glc is exactly right!!! That is why I asked you what your limit on how much you could spend was. I have noticed a lot of people buy that motherboard and there are many rave reviews on NewEgg about that motherboard, but dont let that fool you.

When building a computer you should always buy quality components. You dont need to buy the best money can get, but a good quality piece of hardware will last you much longer and save you a lot more money in the future. If you have the time do some research on what you want to buy first before you make a decision. You can always search this forum for certain types of hardware or post a thread if you cannot find any help!

Hope this helps!
