Hey, can you put a CPU rated at a 533Mhz FSB in a mobo that runs at an 800Mhz FSB? I want to build my mother in law a cheap PC and I want to use a 2.4Ghz 533Mhz FSB Intel Celeron D so am I limited to motherboards rated at a 533Mhz FSB? Or can I use a motherboard that has an 800Mhz FSB? THANKS!

Yes, the 533 will run in an 800 board. It's backwards compatible.

The best motherboard choice for a cheap computer with a Celeron-D if there will be no heavy gaming is something with an Intel 865GV chipset from one of the major manufacturers (Intel, Asus, Abit). Onboard video, no AGP slot. We use the Intel D865GVHZL. We do use PC3200 ram because it's not really more expensive than PC2100 or PC2700 and it allows for a future upgrade to a P4.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I want to go the integrated onboard graphics route. I think I want a little more graphics power than that. I was gonna get an ATI 9200SE b/c it's only like $40. The PC will be mainly for web surfing but we might do some photo editing on it. Will onboard graphics be able to handle photo editing without being slow? Here's a mobo I was considering by Chaintech. It seems to have what I need for only $48! It's got a VIA PT800 Chipset w/ no onboard graphics. This PC will be for my mother-in-law and I'm trying to go as cheap as possible without building a piece of crap.

Using a Via chipset board with an Intel processor will wind up being a piece of crap.
Okay - here's our next step up - a D865GLCL board, and a 9200SE if you want. I build CAD boxes with that board and card - and P4's. A Celeron-D in it would be very nice. Spend the extra 30 bucks or so for a quality motherboard, you won't regret it in the long run. Try it with the onboard video first, if it lags too much, then get the card. The onboard should be able to edit photos just fine, it's got the power of a GF2 MX and it only uses 16mb of system ram when you allocate the max. |

Thanks dude, I'll check it out. I wish I could build computers for a living. It's so much fun.
