bsod help

ok i'm having a big problem. i'm trying to do a fresh instal of xp home on an sata drive and every time i try to format it gives me a bsod at random points that says. driver irql not less or equal. i wrote down the stop code and got everything from a bad sector on the drive to bad memory to conflicting items on a driver. if anyone else has had this issue and resolved it please let me know.
