Laptop Shuts Down Early

Hi,
i have a laptop that is about 1 year old. recently, It has started switching off when running off battery supply when it has about 59% still available battery life. Does anyone know why it does this. It doesnt shut down, it just switches off without shutting down as though the power ha gone on it. i have check the power settings and that isnt supposed to take effect until 4% which if it worked it would then hibernate, but it doesnt do this. if it is any help my laptop make is ei systems with intel celeron and im running on xp

Sounds like a battery going bad. It may read 59%, but the battery may only holding a surface charge.

do you know what type of battery it is ?
it does sound like it is going south.
try changing you settings in power management to never
let it run completely down and then let it recharge
do this a few times and see it it helps

some batteries will develope a pattern from not letting it run down before a recharge.

you could replace the battery with a Nimh type of battery, this type does not develope this problem.

It's a lithium ion. I have seen windows misreport battery charge before. You should be able to check the battery in the bios and see if it reports the same amount of charge as windows. IIRC, the fix was to turn off all of the power management options and let the battery drain completely.
