Newbie with new build and having issues!

I have an ASUS P4P800SE motherboard with a P4 2.4, 1gig ram, 128 GeForce 5500 video, and a Sound Blaster Audigy ZS something or other sound card. I'm not sure if all of this is relevant to my problem, but I can't get the USB ports working. The device manager says "The device is working properly" for all of them.

One thing, when I plug my game controller in, the lights don't even come on. Which I thought was strange.

Did you load the drivers that came with the Mobo for the USB?

Are they the rear mounted USBs or the PCI-cover panel ones?? (If you have the second types).

Yeah, the drivers are loaded from the CD that came with the board.

There are 4 rear mounted ports and 2 that I have in the front of the case.

They did work at first, but I messed up the partitians the first time I installed the OS, so I reformatted and repartitianed and now they don't work.

Have you updated XP since the reinstall? You need SP1 or SP2 installed in order for the USB 2.0 to work.

Now I can't even get it to boot up. The windows screen comes up, then the screen goes black and there's a white line flashing in the upper left corner. After I restart it, it wants to start in Safe Mode. Grrrr.....

Boot into Safe Mode and then go into Device Manager and remove all the video cards listed. Reboot.

Then you may like WinXP even more...it's "prettier" than the previous operating systems. Works a lot better too.
