Removing CD-Writer Drive and affect it has
I want to remove a CD-Writer drive from a comp[uter that has a standard Cd-Rom and A CD-Writer.
However when I remove the CD-Writer the computer does not start up windows, but stops at "BIOS Installed Successfully". Have tried connecting the CD-Rom in exactly the same way as the Writer was installed, but it makes no difference. When I reconnect the Writer, the computer boots up perfectly. What am I doing wrong? |

Carefully check your cabling and jumpering.

When I removed the CD-Writer I connected the normal CD-Rom to the cable that the writer was connected to, yet it did not start up the computer, but loaded to where it stipulated BIOS installed successfully. |

on the cable the middle connector is slave and the end is master . Make sure your jumpers on the drives are the same. If you take out the middle one (slave) , just boot up as normal. If you take out the top one (master), then you may as well swap the existing one and put that as master, and configure the jumper accordingly.
Hope that helps

The writer was the master and the CD-Rom was the slave. Even when I set the CD-Rom to master it would still not boot up the PC. On another note, I now want to install the said writer on another computer. It already has a CD-Rom installed on the same cable as my C: drive. I want to install it to this IDE cable. How do I configure the cable and the drive settings? The other IDE port is being used for another 2 HDD's and a floppy drive. |

Go into the bios after you have changed your drives , and let it auto detect them. then save and exit and all should be okay. With regard to your last post , just follow the same guidelines i said earlier. Doesnt matter what you connect on the ide leads, just as long as they are jumpered correctly.
Post back if youre still unsure mate |

Not sure if i read that right, do you want to install the cd rom to a pc that has a cd and hard drive on the same cable ?? If so , then the motherboard should have a secondary ide connector on it . Just use that, and configure it as master. If it doesnt , then you will have to purchase a pci raid card , which you can then add more hard drives !!

Jumpering - standard 40 wire IDE cables require master/slave jumpering. 80 wire Ultra ATA cables are designed for Cable Select jumpering. |

Will try the former and get back to you if it doesn't work.
As for installing the CD-Writer to the other PC, yes, the Cd-Rom and HDD are on the same IDE cable. The secondary cable is already being utilised by the other 2 HDD's. Will this cause a problem? |

Only thing you can do is to get the pci card , and change the hard drives onto that!! , this will then free up both ide slots on the mobo .
Here is a good diagram of how to conect them all up properley if you want to check it out mate. cheers http://freepctech.com/pc/001/install..._devices.shtml |

A pci card fits into the slots on the motherborad, like a sound card. a pci ide card slots into a free one and has 2 ide slots on the side so you can install your hard drives onto that , thus freeing up both ide slots on the motheboard
