Windows Xp Error
Hi, I am building my 2nd pc, this one with an already used hard drive, etc. and i have it all assembled, but when i turn on the power i get an error message saying windows xp can not load. The only thing i can think of is that the case did not come with enough ribbon cables to connect the 2 cd-rom drives, hard drive, and floppy drive, so i took one from the previous case.
Any help is appreciated and Thanks in advance Dave P.S. Thanks again for the help with my first pc, its running great!

Can you please give us the specs of the computer. Then we can properly diagnose the problem.

If you are using an old hard drive with XP already loaded, and you have put it into a new build with several components that are new to it, windows will not load as it can detect a change of more than one or two components. This is an anti pirate function. I am told if you ring microsoft they are quiet helpfull.
Be AWARE that the above is only hearsay, so please check it is correct, as I have never changed more than two components at the same time myself. Please ask around to confirm my belief, because as I said it may be utter rubbish, then again it may save you hours of fiddling around. Kind Regards

Nope I think that is right. It will accept minor changes, but as soon as someting big happens (new mobo and processor) it prevents itself from booting.

*Unless you are using a recovery CD as opposed to a true installation CD. If your copy was preloaded with anything that says recovery, Windows will not load. Recovery CDs are for use only with the supplied computer - they usually have a few major files missing on the CD which are hidden on a partition of the supplied HDD.

you can put the hard drive in slave on the computer you are using right now, back off the data , put it back in the other machine and reinstall
