Please help data transfer
I just recently finished my first build. I want to take this oppertunity to thank everybody here. I could not have got it done without this forum. Here is the link, if anyones interested
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=121397 Anyway, you guessed it I'm having another issue. I'm trying to retrieve some data from my old windows 98 machine. The data is in a IDE hdd, configured as the slave. I tried to powered down my new comp and install it. I pluged it into my mobo in the IDE plug and restarted, but XP would not boot up. The reason I put this in this forum is, the two computers are now networked through a residential gateway, and I woul like to get my data. I went to my 98 machine and enabled filesharing. I then changed me workgroup to MSHOME. Then I picked the folder I'm trying to get and sared it on the network. But when I go to my XP comp in "my network places" I dont see my old comp listed. Any help would be greatly appriciated. All I want to do is copy and paste the data onto my new comp. I realy dont care how it gets done, although it would be nice to know how to install a IDE drive to work with a SATA Thanks in advance, you guys are the best |

you have to make sure TCP/IP is installed and setup on each computer. make sure that you also have the same workgroup on eack computer, that will make things easier.

I'd suggest reinstalling the drive with the data back in the new machine. Would be a bunch easier than setting up a temporary network. Connect the 98 hdd to the primary IDE channel but set the jumpers to CS (cable select). If it was previously set to master in the 98 computer that would be why it didn't boot in the new machine.

Is it the only device on the cable? If there's more than one device, like a CD rom, on the same cable, they both need to be set to CS.

it is the only device on the cable. I tried to hook it up on the gray and the black, but no luck. It is also plugged into the IDE primary on the mobo and the DVD-rom is hooked to the secondary IDE

Make sure it's plugged in to the end connector on the cable. Check the bios before you connect the 98 hdd and make sure the SATA drive is listed as the first boot device.

OK, I went to BIOS and The DVD-rom was the primary boot device so I changed it to my hardrive. Do I power down before plugging in or does it matter?

Yes, power down. I even turn off or unplug the power supply. Don't forget to plug in the 4 pin power connector too. (no offense to your intelligence intended!!)

You're most welcome! Don't forget to change the jumper again when you put the drive back in the other machine.
