Hi guys, is it ok to put a SDRAM SIMM in a SDRAM DIMM slot. I put an Aria 256 pc133 simm in a dimm slot and most times it won't boot up (locks up during post), and when it does boot it only displays 128 mg ram. The ram used to work fine in another pc so i'm not sure if it's the ram module or a compatability issue. Thanks

Eh? I'm pretty sure theres no way to fit a simm module in a dimm slot and simms dont get up to 128 megabytes. They're edo modules, usually found in 8 and 16 mb sizes. Think maybe the max is 64 or 32. And if its pc133 then its most assuredly a dimm module.

Try checking the motherboard manual for compatibility. Crucial's website also has a compatibility tool.
Also try the one 256 mb module by itself to see if it posts through. |

I called it a simm because it has 8 chips on one side. I thought a dimm had chips on both sides. What I do know is it's a 168 pin 256mg pc133. The manual only mentions dimm, so I think it may not be compatible with the mobo.
Thanks |

Its a dimm. 168 pin SD-ram Dimm module. If it wasn't the notches wouldn't line up and/or it simple wouldn't be the right size. Motherboard manufacturers also test modules of certain brands to ensure compatibility. The list is usually short and other modules "may" work with it but its one checkpoint. Some motherboards also only tolerate a max speed of 100mhz. I have an old compaq can't take anything higher than 100mhz.
Again, try with only the one module installed in the slot closest to the cpu. Sometimes modules just don't like to work with eachother. If it doesn't work by itself then yeah... not much you can do about it. |

If it's 256mb and only has chips on one side, it's a high density module which is probably not compatible with your motherboard. Look your motherboard up at crucial.com, and if there are no 512mb modules listed compatible, this is exactly the case.
