DVD discs

Actually i have 3 questions:

1. Ok this may be a stupid question but if i get this dvd drive: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduc...factory=BROWSE
what kind of DVD's should i get? I really don't know much about this kind of thing, and it looks like its a RW drive which i think means you can get media that supports rewriting?? Like i said im a newbie with this sort of thing.

2. That drive seems really good for the price, but its biege and my tower is black. How do you think this will look? Is it possible to paint these, or will the color really not make that much of a difference?

3. Are all floppy drives the same, because i want to get one but i don't wanna pick out a wrong one. I mean they are really cheap and i dont have one and they could always come in handy when i need to save something that is small and dont feel like wasting an entire CD on it.

1. I wouldn't get that drive. Get a dual layer capable one such asTHIS NEC. It is only $4 more and a much better deal. The NEC can burn virtually any format.

2. It's very simple to paint drives. I wouldn't worry abou the color too much. If you go with the one I linked to above you wouldn't have to paint it

3. As far as I'm concerned. A floppy drive is a floppy drive. Just go with the cheapest one.

That LiteOn is able to burn to a dual layer dvd.

I also believe LiteOn offers all its drives with a black bezel, too. Many manufacturers do.

About the floppy drive: Well, their development stopped about 15 years ago. So, it doesn't matter which one you get.

what kind of blank dvd discs should i get?

also for the floppy drive; i have a dell 4600, and i just remembered trying to install a floppy about 6 months ago but there was no "cage" if you will to hold it. there wasn't anything there, i have no idea...

Hmmm... I guess I mised that. I thought it was called "DVD+R DL" and not "DVD+R9". Anyway, the NEC is a good deal if you can't find the Lite-On in black.

So, what did you think a "DVD+R9" was when you read it ? Just curious.

When the dual layer DVD+R was developed, it was given the name "DVD+R9" and this logo. As the dual layer dvd was called "dvd-9" for holding approx. 9 GB (using 1000), the term DVD+R9 indicated that it is the DVD-9 version of the dvd+r, the dual layer.

Later on, it got changed to DVD+R DL, given the name "double layer" (maybe the DVD+R9 sounds too technical, but everyone understands double layer, who knows), and this logo.

Under the name "DVD+R DL" the dual layer dvd+r hit the shelves, yet some websites still use the old term "DVD+R9". But it's the same thing.

When I read it the 9 went right through my head and I read it as "DVD+R". I never knew it was called DVD+R9 before DL. I just assumed in my above post that +R9 meant dual layer because it was the only one I didn't recognize.

Instead of a floppy drive, buy a USB flash memory key. I've seen them almost as cheap as a floppy drive, they hold a lot more and are a lot faster.

It shouldn't matter what kind of discs you get. Just about any format except DVD-RAM (not common) will work with it. If you plan to play discs in your set top DVD player you may find it only works with wither + or - but not both.

If you have any doubts about what discs work well, either go to the store and buy a single disk - or borrow one from a friend - and try it. When you find what works well, then do a bulk buy. Don't just go out and buy a whole spindle without trying one or two of the same type first.
