Virtual Memory

So what exactly is Virtual Memory, and how does it relate to the system? I know you can adjust the amount your computer has, so I assume it's coming from the hard drive. I was just poking around in Everest and realized that I don't know what virtual memory is!

Yes, it's a space on the hard drive that can be used as virtual RAM, more info:

Here's another good article on Virtual Memory.

You want to keep your virtual memory usage to a minimum. If the computer has to access virtual memory, your performance goes down because accessing the hard drive is much slower than accessing RAM. This is why it's important to have enough RAM in your system...you want to keep virtual memory usage to a minimum.

Okay, that's what I thought it was. Now, I have a gig of RAM, should my computer be using 32% of it's virtual memory and 50% of the RAM?
