startup problem

Hi guys
I am running an AMD XP2500 on a Winfast K7NCR18gPRO2 mobo with Windows XP Pro as my os.
On startup all seems well untill the XP splash screen comes up then as windows is about to start my monitor turns itself off and the system hangs. I am unable to reset or turn the power off at the box and must disconect the power source to reset. I have tried using a Linux cd based os and once again all goes well till I have to select my video option. Could this be my onboard graphics or perhaps my power supply
Thanks Barn

Post your complete system specs by brand and model for everything in the computer including the power supply.

Is this a brand new build or an existing computer?

Does that motherboard have a AGP slot?

Codegen power supplies are not real good and it may be slowly failing. I'd replace that first.

As a test, try disconnecting the optical drives and then try and boot up. If the system boots normally, one of the opticals is bad.

What brand RAM are you using? Do you have two 256MB sticks or just one 512MB stick?

You might also want to go to Seagate and download the drive diagnostic utilities and test that HDD.

I am using kingmax 2X256mb ram
I have dismissed the hd as the problem because I have the same problem when using the Knoppix version of linux straight from the cd. Which appears to work on both drives untill I get to the no go zone. I will try the optical drives and see how i go. thanks barn
