Problem with DVD-RW and DVD-ROM on WinXP

I am unsure why the following set up does not work. The DVD writer is capable of reading and writing DVD's but refuses to recognise CD's. Any ideas???

AMD Barton 3200+,
Abit AN7,
512Mb (2x256Mb) Crucial XMS3200LL,
160Gb Sata Maxtor 9,
TS-H552B DVD-RW,
TS-H352A DVD-ROM,
XFX 128Mb Fx5900XT.

WinXP Home.

Similar problem on a

Athlon 1.4Ghz,
Epox 8k7a,
256Mb Kingston PC2100
20Gb ATA100
80Gb ATA100 Maxtor
Can't remember the drives but they're both Lite-On, 1 DVD-RW & 1 DVD-ROM CD-RW Combo.
ASUS 128Mb Fx5200

WinXP Home

Cheers for any input!
