Wow !!
Whenever I had my case open I just blew the dust out using my breath, and removed the dust off the PCI card with my fingers, so that overall it won't be too dusty.

But well, I guess now I have to get a new can of compressed air (been a year already since I used my last one) and clean my PC thoroughly again. . .

Mine needs a cleaning in a bad way. I've got big dust bunnies flapping from my case fans. My temps have gone waaaay up. I'm running ~60c now while running SETI, used to be ~45c.

Mine was pretty bad a couple of weeks ago. I took a pic of my pc and after viewing it, I knew it was time to clean it. Doesn't help that my cat sheds like none other. Here's a pic:

I can definetly attest to that!
I just did a real good cleaning a few days ago and my CPU temp dropped 8`C!!!!! I opened up the case just to get the dust bunnies out and noticed plainly visible dust on my CPU Heasink. I gave it a little scrub-down (without water ) and when I started her back up, I had dropped 8`C. I can see why though... there was so much dust on the HS that heat transfer would be very poor.

I can relate Freefall... I think I could build my own animal out of all the cat and dog hair I pull out of my PC. Sometimes I think they purposely stuff it in there because they know how much it bugs me.

You can put filters on the intake area of the case, but you still need to clean the filters often.

Yeah, you can use filters but they cut down on airflow and need to be cleaned real often. And they don't keep the real fine particles of dust out...you'll still have to clean in inside of your computer on a regular basis.

Wonderful article Cricket! Hopefully a lot of people will see this and realize that they need to start cleaning out their towers more often.

Took a can of air to my 800 here. *Hack* *hack* *Cough*

It's Hiroshima all over again...

One thing I also recommend is take the cover off the PSU (if you don't care about warrenties) and (Careful not to fry yourself) blow the dust out of it.

Around my area, it is really dusty. I guess I should start using my shop air compressor...

If you have pets it helps to keep the tower off of the floor because they will really suck up cat/dog hair. I took one apart to repair for a teenage girl that looked like something was living in there.

I can vouch for the article's findings.

Just yesterday I blew out my case and HSF. Before the cleaning, the temps were 56/37 (CPU/case), after it turned out to be 52/32. I nice little decrease there

it wasnt even that dusty, since I cleaned it under 4 months ago, but I guess there was alot in the heatsink.

Ummm....Close the casette decks

Seriously though, it's quite alarming how much of an impact a small ab=mount of dust can make to your CPU and case temperatures. I'm not going to confess to letting dust build up in mine though, as every month witout fail I take it to work and clean everything out thoroughly with compressed air although I have fitted a blowgun with a length of 6mm OD pneumatic hose which is great for getting into all those hard to reach places (albeit dangerous if ya put your hand over the end -- dont do it).

What kind of computer do you have? A name brand one or a home built? Most name brand computer don't have the necessary health monitor to give you the CPU and system temps.

A friend built it for me. I have an Asus motherboard, and 256 ram. I am running Windows XPwith dvd and cd burner. I'm not overly computer friendly, so I couldn't give you a model on the motherboard.

You can check the temps in the BIOS or if you still have the ASUS motherboard CD, it has a utility on there (ASUS Probe) that will allow you to keep track of the temps. If you don't have the ASUS motherboard CD you can use Motherboard Monitor. The BIOS will probably give you the most accurate temps.

I clean mine out at least once a month with compressed air. It only takes a few minutes. Dust will definetly damage your computer. Keep it clean!

I saw somewhere here in one of posts, at least I think I did, about places that members were getting their compressed air cans from. I have looked around and some of the places where a bit overpriced from what some members had listed, but I forgot where they had bought from. Any suggestions? I have looked at Best Buy, CompUSA and some other stores.
