Did you plug the IDE cable into the floppy drive? Or was it a floppy cable?

Did you happen to touch the hard drive at all?

It may just be coincidence that the hard drive went out on you right after messing with the floppy drive.

if the power supply short circited would that cause the HD to go out??

i have accidently had a wire bump the case before and the computer shuts off but always boots up normal again after a couple min....it short circited this time but i didnt think that would have done it becuase it has before and never affected the HD.

EDIT::no all the cables were plugged in correctly

Yes, it's possible for something like that to happen. But what would cause the power supply to short out like that? What brand is it?

That's not normal. The wires in the computer are for the most part insulated and shouldn't be shorting out from them touching the case. I suspect there is something else going on here.

What brand is the power supply?

well no i guess i totally left out part of the story...lol srry bout that

when i unplugged the floppy drive i kinda had my fingers half on the plug and half on the wires..the computer was running and i know i should have turned it off first(I HAVE LEARNT MY LESSON NOW) but the wires came out of the plug and one of them bumped the other which kaused the short circuit.... i never thought much of it becuase the computer did boot-up later but then with the HD problem......is there anyway to atleast get the Word Document of work off ???? that is mainly what i need to get

You could try installing that hard drive in another computer and slave it to the existing hard drive. That way the computer will boot up and you can see if you can retrieve your documents from the bad hard drive. I've done this many times.

Cool

You might be able to get the data back by putting the drive in a plastic freezer bag and leave in the freezer overnight. Slave it in another PC and give it a shot. If it comes up start copying. Sometimes you can get them running for a few hours.
