First Build Suggestions (Gaming PC)
Hello PCMech users!
Well, I have a standard fancy light up ATX case lying around with nothing inside of it and I would like to make use of it by building a somewhat high-end, stable, and fast gaming PC. I would like to take advantage of all the new technology that has come out recently (like DDR2, PCIe, HT, etc.) if possible, but I'm kinda new to all this. I was thinking of getting all the parts from Newegg.com as I've heard they are a good, legit company. I really don't know what parts are compatible with each other (except to some degree), but I was wondering if someone with a little more expertise on the subject could put together some parts lists for me. I also would appreciate your opinion on the cheapest P4 gaming builds or any suggestions on what would give me the "best bang for my buck" so to speak. I don't know what would be overkill and I just want a non-sluggish gaming system with plenty of speed and memory to spare. It's not like I'll be doing 3D graphing or CAD on it, I just want it to stay up to date with the latest games for a while. I also want to have somewhat good documentation on my motherboard so Any suggestions? Maybe some of you can post the parts of builds you've made or something. TIA EDIT: Also, I noticed that the Build Your Own PC Guide is getting kinda old, is there anything a normal person building a PC would have to know that's not covered in the guide since the introduction of the new technology I mentioned? Is there anything I should know about before attempting to buy parts and build a PC?

What is your budget? Do you need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and an OS?

Right now, I would probably say my budget is about $1500 (if that sounds right), but less if possible. What's the average budget for a gaming PC these days anyway? I don't need a super duper monster motherboard or anything, something like an Intel board would suffice. And forgive my ignorance, I haven't really kept up to date with this stuff for quite a while and I'm not on the internet much anymore, so I probably missed a whole lot of new hardware and stuff that has come out in the past two years or so. TIA
![]() EDIT: Unfortunately, yes I do need just about everything but the case right now. For the OS I'll go with Windows XP Home Edition. The Viewsonic 19" CRT monitors look good for my price range. The mouse and keyboard isn't that big of a deal as long as the mouse is an optical one. Last edited by ScurrilousPrune; 02-09-2005 at 09:03 PM. |

Wow, quick reply and good parts; part of the reason why I love the PCMech Forums, thanks a lot. I just basically was worried about the motherboard, CPU, and memory compatibility. I can take that basic list and add parts as I like.
EDIT: Now would I need to buy a better heatsink and processor fan, or is the heatsink and fan that the processor comes with good enough? Last edited by ScurrilousPrune; 02-09-2005 at 09:26 PM. |

I saw you mentioned DDR2 in your original post, but I'd stay away from it for now. It's expensive, has high latencies, and really doesn't do anything for performance.

Can you recommend a decent power supply for all this? The case I'm using has 4 fan connections, plus another for the cathode light. Also, I will have to power up all the optical drives and everything, and I want to make sure I have enough power leads and everything.
